Introduction
Facing a heightened power demand
Situated in Norway’s Arctic, Senja Island is home to two main communities of around three hundred residents, primarily relying on the fishing industry for livelihood.
Due to expansion in the fishing sector and growing household demands, these communities face significant challenges in their energy infrastructure. Accessible only via country roads and ferry from the mainland, Senja’s communities have long been challenged with inadequate power supply, necessitating innovative solutions.

Finding Cost-effective Solutions
Located at the end of the electrical grid, the Senja communities experienced heightened power demands due to advancements in fish processing technology, requiring consistent voltage stability.
Plans for further business expansion in the region were anticipated to intensify strain on the local grid, typically addressed through costly methods such as grid expansions. Senja’s power grid faced various challenges, including increasing demands from the fishing industry and households, prompting the exploration of cost-effective alternatives like local energy storage systems for managing electricity consumption.
Senja, Norway
Buffering with Norway’s largest BESS
In response to these challenges, Arva AS, Northern Norway’s largest power supply company, decided to implement a specifically developed BESS solution (Battery Energy Storage Solution).
The solution eases the strain on the existing grid and bolsters the island’s energy resilience by evenly distributing energy consumption throughout the day. This approach mitigates demand peaks and ensures a stable power supply for Senja’s communities. The BESS solution also acts as an energy buffer, charging during periods of low demand and discharging during peak hours, which optimizes energy utilization and promotes sustainability. The solution successfully resolved Senja’s power supply challenges and was appropriately named “Smart Senja”.
Smart Solution
- Norway´s largest battery
- 2 MWh storage capacity at Husøy
- 0,8 MWh capacity in Senjahope
- Rolls-Royce Power Systems supplier

A significant milestone
“We are a proud contributor of sustainable and smart energy supply for northern Senja. By installing local energy storage solutions that will function as energy buffers, we will, together with the local power supplier Arva AS, help provide a satisfactory power supply for residents and businesses at Senja.”
